Additional Therapies

What are 'alternative therapies'? Can an alternative therapy work for your child? This article, presented by the Special Friends Foundation, provides information on several different alternative therapies, including music therapy, hydrotherapy, movement therapy, karate, and hippotherapy. The article discusses how these therapies are used to complement more traditional therapies, such as speech, occupational, and physical therapies. Seize the Day mixed abilities performances is a professional dance theatre company whose members include artists with physical disabilities. The company is based in Prince George's County, MD and performs throughout the metro Washington area, regionally and nationally. In addition to it's cutting edge performance work, Seize the Day's outreach programs serve children and adults with a wide range of disabilities.

I Can Do It Too is a sensory motor/gymnastics program for children with minimal to severe physical, mental, social, language and/or sensory challenges. This program combines sensory stimulation, gross motor activities, and gymnastics to facilitate learning and growth in all aspects of human functioning.

Maryland Therapeutic Riding is a non-profit organization located in Annapolis, Maryland. Our mission is to improve the lives of special needs riders of all ages using a high quality therapeutic riding program that encourages family and volunteer participation.

Therapeutic Riding is a growing and widely-accepted treatment for rehabilitating a range of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. Conditions served include: cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disorders, post-traumatic brain injury, autism, ADHD, and cognitive disorders. Riders experience increased self-confidence and improvement in strength, balance, coordination, attention span, language and social skills.

Founded in 1996 by Executive Director Naomi Parry, MTR's year round program includes both traditional Therapeutic Riding as well as Hippotherapy. Instructor training is also offered. MTR is accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).


We currently offer training and technical consultation to businesses, churches, and other community organizations to help make them more welcoming to families and children with special needs.
